Cara Aley creates musical paintings to tempt your imagination with scenes of seduction and longing. It helps that Aley has a wonderfully expressive voice and sense of melody which help evoke a strong and positive emotional response.

Aley smoothly walks the line between neo-soul and funk, joining current artists such as Erykah Badu and India Arie. Lyrically, Cara's voice and writing are thoughtful and suggestive of all the memories of the past and hope for the present and future. If you have not had the pleasure of listening to Aley, you are in for a surprisingly moving experience.

One of my favorite tracks on Aley's debut album, Any Other Sunday, is "Been Waiting:"

I've been waiting for someone just like you. Loving like this never loved me loving me so true. And I've been waiting, never give up. Always knowing one day, someday there'd be you. Now I'm taking time to savor what you speak. Cuz everytime I hear your voice my knees go weak. And I'm on mental replay loving who you were. Loving who you are and who you'll always be.

Aley keeps her music simple. But it is the simplicity of a naked woman; encompassing so many emotions, curves and contours. You realize, by simply looking -- and listening -- that it takes time to explore each emotion, curve and contour; and this is time well-spent. Aley offers herself to her listeners knowing that she is vulnerable and can be hurt, but letting her listeners know that she trusts enough to share some of her most intimate feelings.

In Any Other Sunday, Aley has created an unusually emotional treasure of songs that will move even the most jaded listener. She speaks to a longing and desire that we all feel and Any Other Sunday is magical no matter what day of the week. | March 2003
