I'm not sure what it is about the concept of incorporating love that might inspire purveyors of House, but of all the groups in all of the musical genres in the world, two of them are named Love Inc. Both of the Love Inc. acts that I know of are headed by house purists who use the Love Inc. name as one place in which to dump their mixes while also producing records under their own and other names. What could be weirder?

Germany's Love Inc. is the -- ahem -- love child of producer Mike Ink, the artist sometimes credited as the father of early 90s German acid-style house. Throughout the 1990s, Ink released albums under his own name and as M:I:5 and Gas, seeming to use the Love Inc. name as the venue for the more commercial of his releases. As well, he was largely responsible for the launch of the Structure label group, which includes house familiar labels like DJungle Fever, Monotone and Blue.

In Canada, Chris Sheppard's name is practically synonymous with Club music which, for this genre, is pretty odd, when you think about it. Club DJs are pretty much known by their unknowability and out of this mystique, Sheppard -- or "Shep," as he's known around the clubs -- has crafted a niche. His syndicated radio show, Groove Station, is heard throughout the country. OK: it's not heard on scores of stations, but it is heard widely and in appropriate time slots: late to early. He's followed the success of the radio show -- or maybe it was vice versa? -- with a series of albums of the same name. Thus Groove Station 6 was released in May of this year and it's a fair bet that Groove Station 7 won't be far behind.

In 1998, Sheppard formed Love Inc. -- not to be confused at all with Mike Ink's Love Inc. -- with vocalist Simone Denny and re-mixer Bradley Daymond. The album that resulted from that partnering, 1998's self-titled Love Inc. was nationally acclaimed and hooked MuchMusic video award nominations in its release year for Best Video; Best Editing; Best Dance Video; Best Cinematography and Best Director for the video of the single "Broken Bones." Another single from that album, "You're A Superstar," charted in the top 20 in the United States and saw a lot of radio play in Canada and Europe.

On the latest album, the recently released Into The Night, Daymond is missing -- off writing, mixing and producing for the likes of 'N Sync, Joee and Boyz-N-Girlz United -- but Sheppard and Denny are back with an oddly mainstream club album that at times seems more suited to air play than dance. Not that it's not good, but it's different for Shep, with tracks that invite you to chill -- the title track "Into The Night" among them -- and others that demand movement -- including the twice mixed "Here Comes The Sunshine" that is the album's first single.

The resulting album reads a little bit like Giorgio Moroder meets The Spice Girls via Aretha. Part of this is due to the larger-than-life vocals of Simone Denny. Denny has been working with Sheppard since the mid-1990s. Denny was also the voice of B.K.S., an earlier Sheppard techno ensemble. If Sheppard, with virtual impresario status on the Canadian music scene -- is the heart of Love Inc., Denny is very much its soul and the most visual aspect. Her voice is full and perfectly controlled: at times she whispers heartbreakingly, as on "Christine," then belts with the best of them on "Around the World," and "Come On (It's Only Love)." If Love Inc. has a recognizable sound of its own, it's due largely to Denny's vocals.

This is not a slight for Sheppard. He remains the Canadian mixster to be reckoned with. Maybe even the only one that a lot of people know on sight and sound. It seems likely that Into The Night can only bring more international luster to Sheppard's already substantial reputation. | September 2000
