The American Heritage Dictionary
defines music as, "The art of organizing sound so as to
elicit an aesthetic response in a listener." I like that. It
doesn't talk about genres and sub-genres. It doesn't talk
about seven figure deals or agents or labels or any of the
stuff that we've inflicted on music over the
last couple-or-six decades. It speaks, I think, more closely
to the heart. Or, maybe more accurately, closer to the heart
of the matter.
What it's about
If we want to wrap it in a nutshell -- and I guess
we do -- Blue Coupe Magazine is about the
organization of sound in a way, like the dude said, that's
aesthetically pleasing. To someone. The fact that some
people prefer their sounds organized in an entirely
different way than others concerns us not at all. In the
next little while you'll see us covering a mind-baffling
array of music and talking to an ever-widening ring of
artists. We won't promise that you'll be interested in all
of the music we talk about: that would be a silly overreach.
However, we do aim to provide the sharpest writing on the
widest band of music that you've encountered on the Web.
Sound like a tall order? We hope so. We like challenges.
Where we're from
Blue Coupe is the new sister publication of
January
Magazine, a highly
successful book-related magazine we started in 1997. We've
been successful with January because we didn't
do what anyone else was doing on a topic that everyone
seemed to be doing something with. Which is exactly where we
aim to take Blue Coupe: down a well-travelled
road without a map. We believe that there is room on this
Web for a well considered, independent voice on the topic of
music. A voice that is uninfluenced and unsupported by the
industry that spins the deals. While we chart this course --
and always, for that matter -- we'd love to hear
from you. As you surf through
Blue Coupe tell us is if you like what you see
or even if you don't. We can take it. Also, we look forward
to having your voice shape our vision for the magazine.
Every two to six weeks, we'll send our subscribers an
update
of what's been happening on Blue Coupe and what
you can expect to see in the near future. If you'd like to
take part of this free
e-mail update, follow the
link.
